Getting Your Car Ready for Winter

How is it that summer is almost over? While you might be busy digging out your warmest sweater and stocking up on hot apple cider, don't forget about care for your car. With bad road conditions just around the corner, it is vital to give your vehicle the care and attention it deserves. From simple maintenance tasks to smart preparation, gear up your car for a smooth and secure ride through the winter season!

Check Your Tire Treads

Worn tires can ultimately make winter driving even more dangerous. Having worn tires increases your stopping distances and can even decrease stability when driving on icy roads. Check your tires using the “Penny Test.” Simply place a penny with Lincoln’s head facing you in the groove of your tire. If his entire head is visible, it is time to replace your tires.

Fill Up Your Tires

Having low tire pressure can also make winter driving even more dangerous. No one wants to spend 20 minutes filling up your tires in -20-degree weather. Be prepared and fill up your tires when the weather is slightly warmer.

Winter Tires

Living in Michigan, sometimes the winter months can belong and harsh with icy roads, so you could consider investing in snow tires. Snow tires preform better in the snow and on ice. Although winter tires can be a little pricey, the investment can potentially save you from an at-fault accident and even higher repair expenses.

Check Your Heater

Chances are you probably don’t use your heater during the summer months. It is always a good idea to test your heater to make sure it is working before the weather gets colder.

Check Your Battery

No one wants to be stranded in a parking lot with a dead car, especially in the winter. It is important to get your battery tested by a professional or test it yourself. A computerized battery tester will give you information about the condition of your battery.

Check Your Fluids

From anti-freeze to oil, window washer fluid, and beyond, it's important to check your fluid levels and keep them filled during cold weather. Always ensure your oil is filled as instructed and changed when needed.

Winter Wiper Blades

Nothing is more irritating then ice stuck to your wiper blades. It is important to consider buying winter wiper blades. These wiper blades have a piece of rubber that prevents snow and ice from sticking to your blades.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Let’s say you do run into some car trouble and end up stranded on the side of the road. You called a tow truck and it’s going to be at least an hour before they can be there. It’s -10-degrees out, your heat isn’t working, your phone just died, and you haven’t eaten all day. This made up scenario is a perfect example of why you need an emergency kit in your car. Here are some important items to keep in that kit:

  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • Portable charger (make sure it is charged)
  • Travel tool kit
  • First aid kit
  • Warm clothes (jacket, hats, and gloves)

Stay warm and Stay safe!
