Maddy: Thanks for joining me for another episode of PFCU's Money Talk Podcast. I'm your host Maddy. And with me today, I have Liz Leveque, the Executive and Board Administrative Assistant here at PFCU. Thank you for joining me today.
Liz: Yes. Thank you for having me.
Maddy: Of course. So for today's episode, we're going to talk about PFCU's Board of Directors and specifically the Associate Board Member position that we currently have available. So, if you could just start with telling me a little bit about what the Board of Directors does at PFCU, that would be great.
Liz: Yeah, of course. So, the Board of Directors oversees the credit union. It helps to give direction and oversight on how the credit union operates.
Maddy: Great. And it is volunteer, right?
Liz: Yes, it is.
Maddy: Awesome. And what is an associate board member then?
Liz: Yeah, so an associate board member is someone that participates in the meetings of the credit union board, but more in an advisory capacity. So, they do not have the authority to vote until they're actually appointed to the board of directors. And this usually occurs when we have a vacancy on the board. So, it's a great way for anyone to be involved with the credit union and increase your knowledge of the industry before you actually have the responsibility of voting and making those final decisions. But you still have a voice in the credit union board.
Maddy: So, like a learning experience almost.
Liz: Exactly.
Maddy: Okay, awesome. What are the expectations of being an associate board member?
Liz: Yes, so our board of directors meets monthly at the headquarters in Portland. We do have remote options to attend the meetings if needed. This meeting is usually in the evenings and it's a commitment of two to three hours. Before the board meeting, we get all the documentation around to share with everyone. So, we usually say it's a minimum of two to three weeks, the week before the board meeting, to review the information just so you're prepared and know what you're going into. And then when you start the position, there is some online guided learning to help you get into the position, understand the information more is and then there's online and ongoing yearly training requirements as well.
Maddy: Oh, awesome so getting that training and continuing the training is always good and then you said just a couple hours the week before the board meeting so not a huge time commitment at all.
Liz: No a few hours a month yeah but definitely a great experience for sure for that time.
Maddy: What do you think are some reasons a person might want to be an associate board member or on the board of directors?
Liz: Yes, well it's a great way to be involved with the credit union movement. People helping people that's what we're here for and it's you know exciting to be involved in that. It's a great way to help the credit unions succeed and grow. PFCU wants to be able to continue to serve our members with the best products and services and being involved on the board is a great way to help make sure that we can still do this.
Maddy: Yeah.
Liz: And it's just an opportunity to be involved in your community. Credit unions are in our local communities so when you are from the community and you're involved in the credit union you're involved in the community in different ways than you have been maybe able to do in the past.
Maddy: Awesome. And how would someone apply if they were interested or if they have more questions, how do they get in touch?
Liz: Yeah, of course. So, if you go to our website, pfcu4me.com, if you go to the About Us page, we actually have a page for the Board of Directors. There's a form, you just put in your name, some contact information, and that lets us know that you're interested and maybe you have questions, you’re interested in applying for the position. So, if you go on there and fill out that form, that will come to us and then I can respond and answer any questions you have or if there's questions I can't answer, I can get you in touch with the appropriate person to help see if this would be a good fit for you.
Maddy: So yes, if you are interested, head out to the website and you would be talking to Liz who is the most friendly person you will ever meet. So, if you have any questions, she would be happy to help you or like she said, reach out to someone who would be able to help. Thank you so much, Liz, for talking with me today.
Liz: Yes, thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure.
