Hi everyone, welcome to this bonus episode of PFCU's Money Talk Podcast, I'm your host, Maddy. I wanted to put out just a quick episode about Halloween safety tips. It's an exciting holiday for both children and adults; you can dress up, show off, and indulge in some treats along the way. And while we love the creativity and the ability to show off some spooktacular costumes, it’s important to keep in mind a few tips and tricks to have a worry-free evening.

Tip #1 is to confirm costume safety. Check to make sure costumes are not too long, easy to walk in and don’t restrict breathing or vision. Adding reflective elements to a costume makes them easier to see in the dark.

Tip #2 is to know the area. By chooseing an area that you know it will be easier to navigate for both you and your children. Setting a designated point to meet is very important if you happen to get separated. This will make it easier to find each other and reconnect.

Tip #3 is to check the goods. Always inspect your children’s candy haul before they dig in. Any unwrapped, homemade or questionable items should be thrown out.

Tip #4 is to follow the road rules. The promise of candy can be tempting, but it’s important to not get too excited and to cross traffic only where designated and stick to sidewalks. Remind your kids to look both ways before crossing the street and pick roads that are well lit and not busy if possible.

And tip #5 is to brighten up. Pairing brightly colored costumes with flashlights and glow sticks ensures both being able to see and be seen better.

And while these are just a few ideas, make sure that you discuss safety topics ahead of trick-or-treat time with your children. This is very important to make sure that you have a very fun and safe night. Happy Halloween everyone! Thanks for listening.
