Hey everyone, thanks for joining me on this episode of Money Talk. I’m your host, Maddy. I have some awesome information today about securing your mobile device, all supplied by the Knowbe4 Security Team!
We know that everyone is on their phones and many of us have a lot of personal and sensitive information on our device. Many times, it seems like we have our whole lives stored on our phone in one way or another. And not only that, but there is so much information presented to us and scams that are constantly evolving, we want to make sure that you’re protecting your information in the best ways possible.
Here are some mobile security best practices from the Knowbe4 security team to minimize the risk of your information getting in the wrong hands.
Number 1 is to ensure that your phone’s operating system is up to date. Many times, you get a notification to update your operating system because of a security flaw and those flaws are how malicious threats are caused.
Next is to watch out for malicious apps in your app store. Official app stores like the Apple store or Google Play store keep an eye out for malicious apps and regularly remove them but it is possible that some of them slip through the cracks. If you download a malicious app, these can contain malware. Only download from official app stores, look at the number of downloads an app has and read reviews.
Third is making sure that applications are not asking for permissions to things on your phone that are not necessary to the function of the app. Read over everything and if something seems off in the terms and permissions, you might want to find an alternative app.
Having no password or weak password protection on your phone leaves you vulnerable to thieves if you’re phone is every lost or stolen. Imagine all the information they would access to if you don’t keep your phone locked.
The last best practice is to be careful on public Wi-Fi. Unprotected Wi-Fi networks are easy for criminals to get on and see what you’re doing. Don’t make sensitive transactions, such as banking transactions, over public Wi-Fi or log onto any of your online services.
I hope these quick tips will help you keep your mobile device and your personal information safe. Thanks for listening, see you next time!
